At the Crown Granary Museum, there is an exhibitio At the Crown Granary Museum, there is an exhibition focusing on the industrial history of the Raahe region! 💥

⚒ In the 17th century, industrial activity was only taking its first steps. A Potash Factory operated in Siikajoki (1672–1682) and was a significant industrial facility in the region at the time. Potash, or lye made from the ash of deciduous trees, was supplied to the glass industry in Stockholm.

⚙️ In the 18th and 19th centuries, shipbuilding and the tar trade dominated the economic structure. The Leufstadius Tobacco Factory operated in Old Town Raahe from 1848 to 1867. The region was also home to some of Finland’s oldest and largest mills, such as the Lundberg Steam Mill (1873–1904), where flour was milled from rye and wheat.

⚒ The 20th century brought the rise of the metal industry. Northern Finland’s first steel foundry and machine workshop, Ruona Ltd. (1919–1952), quickly became a major player. Especially during wartime, Ruona was Raahe’s most important company and a major employer: up to 700 residents of Raahe worked at the factory out of the city’s approximately 4,500 inhabitants. The founding of Ruona triggered strong growth in the metal industry, culminating in the establishment of the Rautaruukki Raahe in 1960.

The Raahe Museums are part of the official programme of Oulu2026 – European Capital of Culture 2026.
