Fishing has always been a part of life in the Raahe region. 🐟 The conditions have been favorable, with abundant fish stocks.

🎣 Especially in the waters of Raahe, herring has been the main catch, but fishermen also landed pike, perch, salmon, bream, and whitefish. In the Raahe region, fat-bellied spawning herring was called pauhakala, and it was fished during the spawning season using special pauhapaatti boats.

⚓ In Pyhäjoki, you can find the Pauhalla statue. The Kaukoranta area of Pyhäjoki also preserves old boat and net sheds, as well as fish storage buildings—remnants of the area's rich fishing traditions.

🎣 Fishing nets were handmade, providing work for many women.

⚓ Gaining staple town rights in 1791 was a major milestone for Raahe, strengthening its role in maritime trade. Around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, many sailors turned to fishing after retiring from ocean voyages. At that time, fishing—especially herring fishing—provided a solid livelihood, and the rich fishing grounds off the coast ensured that many families had food on the table.

On the Flatland Route cycling trail, you can enjoy stunning seaside landscapes from the saddle of your bike 🏖

🚵 The route from Liminka to Pyhäjoki via Lumijoki, Siikajoki, and Raahe follows flat terrain with sandy beaches and harbor views.

🚵 Starting from Varjakka, you’ll encounter a chain of eight small fishing harbors stretching all the way to Siikajoki. These quaint harbors make great rest stops.

🚵 The natural sandy beach of Varessäikkä is perfect for a break. Take a refreshing swim or do some birdwatching from the lighthouse-like tower.

🚵 From the main road in Raahe, there's a 7 km detour to the Tauvo beach. Cyclists might be tempted to skip it, but the beautiful sandy shore at the end makes the extra effort more than worth it.
